10 Signs Your Website Needs a Redesign

Ten clear signs that your business website is costing you customers — from slow loading and broken mobile layouts to no enquiries — and what to fix first.

A website rarely breaks all at once. It slowly falls behind: a little slower, a little dated, a few fewer enquiries each month. Because nothing dramatic happens, many businesses keep a website that quietly sends customers to competitors.

Here are ten signs it is time for a redesign — and how to tell whether you need a full rebuild or just a few fixes.

1. It is hard to use on a phone

Open your website on your phone. If you have to zoom to read, buttons are too small to tap, or parts of the page spill off the screen, most of your visitors are having a bad time. In India, the majority of website visits come from mobiles.

2. It loads slowly

If a page takes more than a few seconds to appear on mobile data, many visitors leave before they see anything. Slow websites also rank lower on Google. Common causes are huge images, cheap overloaded hosting, and outdated code or plugins.

3. Enquiries have dropped, or never came

A website exists to bring business. If the phone and enquiry form are quiet even though people visit, something stands in the way: the message is unclear, the contact options are hidden, or the site does not build trust.

4. You cannot update it yourself

If changing a phone number or adding a new service means calling a developer and waiting a week, the website will always be out of date. A modern website lets your team update text, photos and pages easily.

5. It no longer describes your business

Businesses change. If your website still shows services you stopped offering, old prices, a former address or a team that has moved on, customers notice — and wonder what else is out of date.

6. It looks older than your competitors

Fair or not, customers judge your business by your website in seconds. Compare your site with your three closest competitors on your phone. If yours looks the oldest, many customers will assume your service is too.

7. Browsers warn that it is "Not secure"

If your address starts with http:// instead of https://, browsers show a "Not secure" warning — especially on pages with forms. Today an SSL certificate is often free with hosting, so there is no reason to scare visitors away.

8. It does not appear on Google

Search for your own services with your area name — "interior designer in Thane", for example. If you do not appear, or only competitors do, the website may lack basic SEO: proper titles, headings, content for each service, speed, and a connection to your Google Business Profile. Our local SEO guide explains what Google looks for.

9. You cannot tell what is working

If you do not know how many people visit, where they come from, or which pages bring enquiries, you cannot improve anything. A website should be connected to Google Analytics and Google Search Console from day one.

10. It is built on something nobody supports

Very old platforms, abandoned themes, or custom code from a developer who has disappeared are risks. They are harder to secure, harder to change and can stop working when the hosting company updates its servers.

Redesign or fix?

Not every problem needs a new website. A rough guide:

SituationUsually enough
Content is outdated but the site is fast and mobile-friendlyUpdate the content
One or two slow pages, otherwise fineOptimise images and hosting
Not secureInstall SSL and fix links
Hard to use on phones, slow everywhere, looks datedRedesign

Before you redesign: protect your Google rankings

A redesign can lose the rankings your old site earned if page addresses change carelessly. Before launch:

  • List every important page on the old website.
  • Keep the same addresses where possible.
  • Where addresses change, set up 301 redirects from old to new.
  • Keep good existing content instead of throwing it away.
  • Resubmit your sitemap in Google Search Console after launch.

Plan the budget

A redesign costs about the same as a new website of the same size, sometimes less if content and structure can be reused. Our guide to website cost in India explains what drives the price, and how to choose a website design company in Mumbai helps you pick the right partner.
