How to Choose a Website Design Company in Mumbai

A practical checklist for hiring a website design company in Mumbai — what to look at, what to ask, the red flags, and how to compare quotes fairly.

Mumbai has hundreds of web design companies, from one-person freelancers to agencies with large teams. Many are good. Some will leave you with a slow website, a domain you do not control and a developer who stops picking up the phone.

You do not need to understand code to choose well. You need to know what to look at and what to ask.

Start with what you need, not who to hire

Before you call anyone, write down three things:

  1. What should the website do? Bring enquiries? Sell products online? Show a portfolio? Let customers book appointments?
  2. Who is it for? Retail customers on phones, B2B buyers on laptops, students, patients, NRIs?
  3. What is your budget range and deadline? A range is enough. It helps a company propose the right scope instead of guessing.

Companies give better and more comparable quotes when they all answer the same brief. If you want help with costs first, read what a website costs in India.

1. Look at live websites, on your phone

Portfolios are screenshots. Ask for links to five or six websites they built and open them on your phone:

  • Do they load quickly on mobile data?
  • Is the text readable without zooming?
  • Can you find the phone number and enquiry form in seconds?
  • Do the forms actually work?

Then look at the businesses themselves. Are any of them in your industry or of your size?

2. Talk to one or two of their clients

A good company will happily share a reference. Ask the client three questions: Was it delivered on time? Was the price what was quoted? Do they still answer when something breaks?

3. Check who will actually do the work

In some agencies, the person who sells the project is not the person who builds it. Ask who designs, who develops, and who you will speak to week to week. Clear answers are a good sign.

4. Understand what is included

A good quote lists:

  • Pages and page templates
  • Features (forms, payments, booking, integrations)
  • Number of design revision rounds
  • Content: who writes it and who supplies photos
  • Basic SEO setup: titles, descriptions, sitemap, Google Search Console
  • Training so your team can update the website
  • Support period after launch

If two quotes list different things, they are not comparable yet. Ask both companies to quote the same scope.

5. Make sure you will own everything

This is the most important point, and the one most often missed.

  • The domain must be registered in your name, with your email address, and you should have the login.
  • Hosting should be on an account you own or can take over.
  • The website files and code should be yours to move if you ever change provider.

If a company refuses any of this, keep looking.

6. Ask about speed and mobile

Google ranks mobile-friendly, fast websites higher, and customers leave slow ones. Ask how they make websites fast, what hosting they recommend and why, and whether images are compressed for the web.

7. Ask what happens after launch

Websites need updates, backups and small changes. Ask:

  • Is there a free support period, and for how long?
  • What does a change cost after it ends?
  • How quickly do they respond if the website is down?

Red flags

  • A price given before any questions are asked. They do not know what you need yet.
  • "Guaranteed first page on Google." Nobody controls Google's rankings. Read how long SEO really takes.
  • The domain is registered in their name. Your business address should belong to you.
  • No written scope. Disagreements later always come from things nobody wrote down.
  • Full payment upfront. A fair structure is an advance, then milestones, then the balance at launch.
  • Cannot show live work. Or only shows designs that were never built.

Local or remote?

Many good web companies work entirely online. Being local in Mumbai still helps when you want to sit together for planning, review designs in person, or need someone who understands your local market — for example, which areas your customers search from. Local experience also matters for local SEO, which is how nearby customers find you.

A short comparison sheet

When you have quotes from three companies, compare them on one page:

Company ACompany BCompany C
Price for the build
Yearly running cost
Pages and features included
Revision rounds
Timeline
Domain and code owned by you
Support after launch
Live websites you checked

The cheapest column is rarely the right one. The one with the clearest answers usually is.
