Many small businesses in India run well without a website. Customers come through word of mouth, WhatsApp, an Instagram page and a Google listing. So is a website still worth the money?
For most businesses, yes — but not for the reasons people usually give. And for some, it can wait. Here is an honest look.
What a website does that social media cannot
You own it
Your Instagram page, Facebook page and marketplace listings belong to those platforms. Their rules, their algorithms and their decisions about who sees your posts. A website on your own domain is the one place online that is fully yours.
It shows up when people search
When someone searches Google for your service and area — "tailor in Borivali", "CA in Mulund", "packaging supplier in Bhiwandi" — Google mostly shows websites and Google Business Profiles. Social media pages rarely rank for those searches.
It answers questions before people call
Services, prices or price ranges, location, timings, how you work, photos of real work. Customers who arrive having read this are better informed and more likely to buy.
It builds trust, especially for larger orders
B2B buyers, corporate clients, NRIs and first-time customers often check your website before contacting you. No website — or a broken one — makes a business look smaller or less established than it is.
It works with everything else
Your Google Business Profile, ads, WhatsApp, visiting cards and Instagram bio can all point to one place with complete information. See our Google Business Profile guide for how the two work together.
What a website will not do on its own
A website is not a magic lead machine. Without being found, it is a brochure nobody opens. It needs:
- Basic SEO, so Google understands it — see local SEO for Mumbai businesses
- A clear way to contact you, especially on mobile
- Occasional updates so information stays current
When you can wait
A website may not be your top priority yet if:
- Almost all your business comes from a small circle of repeat customers and referrals.
- You are still testing whether the business idea works.
- You have no time to answer enquiries a website would bring.
In that case, start with a complete Google Business Profile and a well-organised WhatsApp Business setup, and plan a website when you are ready to grow.
When you should not wait
- You want customers from outside your existing network.
- You compete with businesses that already rank on Google.
- You sell to companies, institutions or customers abroad.
- You run ads — sending ad traffic to a social media page wastes much of it.
- You want to sell online.
How much website does a small business need?
Usually less than people think. A strong starting point is:
- Home — what you do, where, and why customers choose you
- Services or products — one clear page each for the main ones
- About — the people and story behind the business
- Contact — phone, WhatsApp, map, timings and a short form
That can be a small, fast website that costs far less than a large one. Our guide to website cost in India explains what drives the price, and static vs dynamic websites explains why a simple site is often the better choice.
The bottom line
If you want new customers to find and trust you, a website is one of the best investments a small business can make — as long as it is mobile-friendly, fast, easy to contact you from, and connected to your Google listing. See what that looks like in mobile-friendly website design.
