"Core Web Vitals" sounds technical, but the idea behind it is simple: Google measures how a page feels to a real person using it. Does the main content appear quickly? Does the page respond when you tap? Does it stay still, or jump around while loading?

These measurements are part of how Google judges page experience, and they also predict whether visitors stay or leave. Here is what each one means, without the jargon.

The three Core Web Vitals

1. LCP — Largest Contentful Paint (loading)

What it measures: how long it takes for the biggest piece of content on the screen — usually the main image or heading — to appear.

In plain words: "How soon can I see what this page is about?"

Google's target: 2.5 seconds or less for most visits.

Usual causes of a poor LCP:

  • A large, uncompressed hero image
  • Slow server response from cheap or distant hosting
  • Heavy fonts or scripts that block the page from showing

2. INP — Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness)

What it measures: how quickly the page reacts after someone taps, clicks or types.

In plain words: "When I tap the menu, does it open straight away?"

Google's target: 200 milliseconds or less.

Usual causes of a poor INP:

  • Too much JavaScript running in the background
  • Heavy chat widgets, trackers and third-party scripts
  • Complicated sliders and animations

3. CLS — Cumulative Layout Shift (visual stability)

What it measures: how much things move around unexpectedly while the page loads.

In plain words: "Did the button jump just as I tried to tap it?"

Google's target: a score of 0.1 or less.

Usual causes of a poor CLS:

  • Images and videos without a reserved size
  • Banners or pop-ups that push content down after loading
  • Web fonts that load late and change the text size

Summary table

MetricMeasuresGoodCommon fix
LCPLoading of main content≤ 2.5 sCompress hero image, faster hosting
INPResponse to taps and clicks≤ 200 msRemove heavy scripts and widgets
CLSLayout stability≤ 0.1Set image sizes, avoid late-loading banners

Why business owners should care

  • Rankings. Page experience is one of the signals Google uses. It will not outrank great content on its own, but between similar pages, the faster one has an edge.
  • Enquiries. Visitors leave pages that are slow or jumpy, especially on mobile data. Every visitor who leaves is a lost enquiry, regardless of rankings.
  • Ad costs. Slow landing pages waste ad spend because people leave before seeing your offer.

How to check your scores

  1. PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev): enter a page address. The top section shows real-user data if Google has enough of it; the lower section is a lab test with specific suggestions.
  2. Google Search Console — the Core Web Vitals report groups your pages into "Good", "Needs improvement" and "Poor", for mobile and desktop.

Always check mobile first. That is where most problems show up and where most of your visitors are.

What usually fixes them

Most poor scores come from a short list of problems:

  1. Oversized images — resize, compress and use WebP.
  2. Slow hosting — a better plan or a server closer to your customers.
  3. Too many scripts — remove plugins and widgets you do not need.
  4. No reserved space for media — set width and height for images and embeds.
  5. Late-loading banners and pop-ups — reserve space or remove them.

Do not chase a perfect 100

A perfect PageSpeed score is not the goal. "Good" on all three Core Web Vitals for real users is. Once you are there, your time is better spent on content, clear calls-to-action and local SEO — see how long SEO takes for where speed fits in the bigger picture.
